Stop Killing Your Creativity: 3 Steps to Find Your Unique Creativity

I’ve had enough.

I’ve had enough of all the tutorials on how to create.

“Talk about X like Y and gain Z.”

People are manufacturing the process of making art,

and it was hurting more than helping me.

You have an inner child who wants to jump in the muddy puddle.

But you don’t let it when care more about getting likes than doing what you like.

So rather than being yourself and making a mess, you worry about being liked less

This world doesn’t need more viral content. It needs more of you

This inner child, let’s name it Creativity, is attracted by curiosity.

This curiosity has stuck a fork in the electrical socket, but it also shared its lunch with the lonely kid at school.

Leashing this inner child out of fear of making a mistake means you are stealing the potential beauty.

How do you kill your unique creativity?

You listen to people. You allow them to replace your gut. Your instinct. Your… you.

Remember when you first saw a child on a leash at an amusement park? Sad, right?

That’s what it looks like when you are taking advice on creativity as an absolute, as if it’s the only way.

Viral or trending advice is not the only way. Your style could be the next viral way.

But you will never know.

Unless you decide to jump in that muddy puddle.

As a kid, you didn’t really consider the rules until after you made the mistakes. Those mistakes, though frustrating for your parents, made you unique. They were the glimpses of your heart. Yea my mom couldn’t take me to restaurants… but I think I turned out okay.

You may not have it all figured out. But the joy in creating content is not figuring out how to go viral.

It’s in figuring out what you love the most.

So-what if talking about how berries removes plastic from your cells isn’t trending? You may not be talking about that in 5 years, but you can be sure whatever it is, it’s something you are passionate about.

Your audience will come when your passion is obvious.

So what keeps your creativity alive?

Confidence. Confidence in your curiosity. You must embrace your curious side.

So rather than your decisions looking like happy mistakes, they are perceived as intentional.

People don’t realize that you are just having fun. It looks like you are hard at work, but the truth is, you are just doing what you love, and other people are loving it.

So stop watching tutorials on the latest algorithm.

Stop following viral templates.

Consume content you love that give you more inspiration than instruction.

Even if one person loves it, it’s enough.

Even if no one sees it, it doesn’t matter.

You create because you love it. Not because you need other people to love it.

In short,

Don’t let people snuff your inner child.

Let your curiosity lead you to beautiful moments, even if you step in a few muddy puddles along the way.

You will discover your boundaries along the way. Then adjust.

Create because you love it, not because you want other people to love it.

Here are the simple steps to figure out what you want to create:

List three topics you can’t shut up about. For each topic, give three reasons why that topic means a lot to you. Create something valuable for others based on 1 of those reasons. (Write a facebook post, Write a short story, poem, record a video, make a song, etc.)

And yes I am writing this for myself. But I hope this can help someone else.
